There’s plenty to do on the Gold Coast of Costa Rica; however, if you have the time, we encourage you to explore further.  The country has so much to offer . . . from the cosmopolitan “action” of San Jose, to rain forests, live volcanoes, cloud forests, dozens of national parks, etc.  Costa Rica has one of the world’s best systems of wildlife refuges and national parks, and Costa Rica’s 35 wildlife refuges protect more than 25% of the country’s territory!

You might even give some thought to visiting our neighbors, Nicaragua and Panama, which also have much to offer.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

that Costa Rica, with just 0.03 percent of the world’s total land mass, holds approximately 6 percent of its biodiversity!

The book 1,000 Places to See Before you Die, by Paticia Schultz, lists the following places in Costa Rica:

1.  Cordovado National Park, Puerto Jimenez, Osa Penisnsula.  As Ms. Schultz writes, “Covering one third of the remote Osa Peninsula that juts into the Pacific Ocean, in what National Geographic called “the most biologically intense place on earth”, . . .

2.  Manuel Antonio National Park, Quepos, Puntarenas.  In Ms. Schultz’s words:  “Of Costa Rica’s dozens of national parks, Manuel Antonio has long been one of the jewels, an idyllic combination of exuberant forest, white-sand beaches, and rich coral reefs.”

3.  Chachugua Rain Forest Hotel, La Fortuna, San Carlos.  “This beautiful situated cattle ranch is one of Costa Rica’s most favored rain forest getaways.  Located in the Tilaran Mountain range, one of the most diverse areas in this verdant country, the Chachagua’s 50-acre spread nestles up against the Children’s International Rain Forest, which in turn joins the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve:  Potential for bird and wildlife viewing here is tremendous.  Arenal Volcano and Lake are an easy four-wheel drive away; there is spelunking, white-water rafting, and rappelling for those who aspire to do it all, and the Tabacon Hot Springs for those who don’t.”

Many residents and visitors to the Gold Coast like to visit Granada, Nicaragua - the hub of Nicaragua’s emerging tourism trade.  One of the oldest and prettiest cities in the America’s, Granada sits on the northwest shore of Lake Nicaragua.

Although wonderful at any time of year, an ideal time to visit Grenada is January, when the breezes off the water provide relief from the somewhat steamy temperatures.  Highlights of Granada include the colorful colonial architecture, the Parque Central, the nearby Masaya volcano, and the hilltop town of Catarina, with its gardens, handicrafts, and splendid views.
