LIR Airport

If you are planning to visit the Gold Coast of Costa Rica, you will want to fly into Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (Airport Code: LIR), located just south of Liberia.  (See Map).

Apparently, approximately 30 airlines fly into LIR (mostly small local commuters and charters); however, the ones that will be of primary interest to Gringos from North America are:

To get from the airport to your accommodations, we highly recommend (and use) Ecotrans.

The other possibility is to fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (Code: SJO), in San Jose (actually, the airport is in Alajuela).  This will provide you with more airline options, especially if coming from Canada, the UK, or Europe.  The downside is that you then have to get to the coast, by a local airline (such as Sansa or Nature Air), a rental car (about a pleasant five hour drive), or by bus (either public or private).  For the public bus schedule, click here.  A more comfortable (but somewhat more expensive) option is a private bus service, such as the Gray Line / Fantasy Bus.
